The membership of the Morrisseau Family Foundation is natural and dictated by blood. The seven children of Norval Morrisseau and Harriet Kakegamic comprise the membership.
Check the records. They were there in the beginning and they were there in the end. Their Anishnabe Heritage is basic to an understanding of Morrisseau's legacy. Unlike many children, they suffered the joy and pain of having a genius for a father, and, as with many who chose the path less travelled the family paid in his fragmented presence. Yet they always came back. They remained family. They grew in intense awareness of their fathers life as a shaman and artist.
The Morrisseau Children honour with respect and with unconditional love the man who was their father, Norval Morrisseau.
The Morrisseau Family Continues
Lisa Morrisseau
My late parents have 7 children, 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. 4 grandchildren have passed on, Pierre's sons, Keith, Kevin I, Kevin II Morrisseau and daughter Heather. We have carried on with all the sadness and happiness in our lives.
We are a strong family and we will continue to carry on. Thanks for everything and God Bless you.
Christian Morrisseau
My sister, Lisa speaks from the heart. I speak as a son, an artist, and an Ojibwe. Three of my brothers are artists. This is not by accident. They work with and out of Anishnabe Myths that have become the mark of the Woodland School of Art.
Each of us had to contend with the terrible strength of our father's vision. We are not alone. Such was his ability there is hardly a Native artist who does not learn from his artistic strength.
My father taught by being. He never gave lessons. Art for him was waking in the morning. Art was revelation of the Ojibwe history. Art was getting ready for bed. We didn't name it. We just knew it. We lived Norval Morrisseau's art.
Each of my brother's work sits solidly within the scope of Woodland Art - yet each is easily seen as different and alone.
