Mission Statement
As chair of The Morrisseau Family Foundation, I would like to invite you to support us in our efforts to assert our legal right to the artistic legacy of our father, Norval Morrisseau.
The Foundation is a registered Charitable Organization licensed in the province of Ontario.
Our mandate is as follows:
1. To assert the stability and continuity of the clan of the Copper Thunderbird, Norval Morrisseau, and the stewardship of his legacy through the family line. We aim to educate the public about our father, his grandfather Potan Nanakonagos, and the story-telling and shamanic traditions of both the Morrisseau and Kakegamic families. We are a strong family and we will continue to carry on.
2. To maintain and grow Norval Morrisseau’s stature as a major international artist, to preserve his legacy and ensure that it is respected and honoured. It is our considered belief that Norval Morrisseau's legacy now belongs to the Native People of Canada and, specifically, to his seven children. We intend to assert our legal ownership of the Morrisseau legacy, to ensure an appropriate future for the Morrisseau family, and to protect the legacy from illegal exploitation.
3. To enforce the Morrisseau Family Foundation’s status as copyright holders to the legacy of Norval Morrisseau. In June 2009, the Morrisseau Family Foundation was awarded copyright over the artistic legacy of Norval Morrisseau in the Canadian Courts.
Sincerely
Victoria Kakegamic
